HELCOM Baltic Cities Summit

Agenda
The fi rst ever Baltic Cities Summit will discuss and give input to the HELCOM Ministerial Meeting of 20 May 2010 on how local actors and stakeholders can contribute to the implementation of the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan.
The Summit focuses on measures at the sub-regional level to reduce inputs of nutrients from municipal and shipping sewage, causing eutrophication of the Baltic Sea.

  • Mayors of the HELCOM Member States’ capitals and major coastal cities, representatives of Ministries of Environment and Transportation, including representatives of the EU
  • Mayors of Belarus and Ukrainian cities located in the Baltic catchment area
  • Directors of municipal waste water treatment utilities
  • Managers of major Baltic passenger ports and shipping companies
  • Managers of international fi nancing institutions
  • NGOs and other organizations from the Baltic region

Sharing experience and exploring funding possibilities
Major cities, ports, shipping companies, water utilities, international fi nancial institutions and NGOs from around the Baltic Sea are invited to discuss and showcase examples of how local actors and stakeholders can contribute to the implementation of the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan to drastically reduce pollution to the sea and restore its good ecological status by 2021.
The Baltic Cities Summit provides opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, learning from experiences in implementing actions at the sub-regional level to improve the state of the marine environment, and a possibility for positive profi ling and promotion. Among the major issues to be
examined at the Summit are new investments, management practices and tools in advanced wastewater treatment, facilities for wastewaters from shipping and public awareness raising. The event also gives opportunity to explore different funding possibilities.
